What is the Relationship between Social Work Education and Information Technology?
Computers and Information Technology Social Work: Education, Training, and Practice discusses the impact that recent technological advances have had on social work practice and education. This unique book covers a wide range of topics for social workers and educators highlighting various aspects of technology applied to assist those in helping professions. You’ll learn how computers can be used in child protective cases and the benefits of video-conference in social work programs. Computers and Information Technology in Social Work will show you how new advances in technology can improve your social work practice or education programme.
Computers and Information Technology in Social Work examines many different aspects of technology and demonstrates how they can be applied to assist you in making a positive impact on the communities, clients, and Organizations that you serve. This guide offers specific methods and suggestions for providing students with better services and enhanced instruction on the use of current technologies in social work practice.
Technologies are divided into three groups:
- Computer applications.
- Computer networks.
- Distance education technologies.

Interactive Computer Applications: This gives useful tools to facilitate. the teaching and learning process in social work education. Types of interactive computers application are hypertext, multimedia, interactive video discs. It also includes all types of interactive computer applications which can be used to teach social work. They give course specific knowledge, skills and values to the students.
Often simply referred to as a network, is a collection of computers and other hardware components interconnected by communication channels that allow sharing of resources and information. Where at least one process in one device is able to send/receive data to/from at least one process residing in a remote device, then the two devices are said to be in a network. Simply, more than one computer interconnected through a communication medium for information interchange is called a computer network.
Internet: It is considered as the biggest computer network presented in the world today. It connects with the LAN and WAN of many world computer networks. The importance of internet is seen as the ability of a variety of operating systems which are used as LAN networks. Network connections are a means of multitude of the user’s contact system which can relocate and pass on the information without any difficulty within the internet systems.
Database and other Information Resources: Systems are generally imprecise, generic and broad in their actual use failing to sufficiently identify/describe the big-pharmaceutical active ingredient or final product and generally failing to convey information regarding biological source, manufacture and specifications/ quality control that define these agents/products. Most of these systems Concentrate solely on one parameter, with this often having little relevance to bio-pharmaceutical products without inclusion. of much other information.
Trade names/trade marks are inadequate, with these names changed arbitrarily, e.g., often carried over to new, next-generation products. FDA-assigned (proper) names are actually generic names, with the same name applied to similar products. Similarly, Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) Registry names and numbers are also generic in their treatment of bio-pharmaceuticals, e.g. failing to distinguish between similar but unique/ different products from different manufacturers. Protein/ polypeptide and gene sequences and culture collection depository numbers for cell lines and genetic constructs only begin to describe products.
Electronic Mail: “Electronic Mail”, better known as email, is one of the most widely used forms of communication today. This chapter provides a basic introduction to running a mail server on FreeBSD, as well as an introduction to sending and receiving email using FreeBSD, however, it is not a complete reference and in fact many important considerations are omitted.
Today’s email systems are based on a store-and-forward model. Email servers accept, forward, deliver and store messages. Neither the users nor their computers are required to be online simultaneously they need connect only briefly, typically to an email server, for as long at it takes to send or receive messages. An email message consists of three components, the message envelope, the message header, and the message body. The message header contains control information, including, minimally, an originator’s email address and one or more recipient addresses. Usually, descriptive information is also added, such as a subject header field and a message submission date/time stamp.
Listserv Servers: They are commonly known by the name of “Littserv”. They do the outgoing of information to the people with same interest. They email people and they receive and send messages from other people who are also a par of Listserv. A lot of people connected with social work use Listserv in social work education. In social work they are best known by the name of SOC-WORK. Listserv was developed to provide social work a forum through which effective communication can take place and they can share information to a wide variety of people.
Distance Education Technologies:
The traditional mode of education of social work involves teacher and student in the same class. Recent developments in tee-communications have made it possible to study with two miles apart. Distance education refers to “formal approach towards learning in which a majority of instructions occurs while the educator and learner are at a distance from each other”.
